DANCE IN THE ROUND
It's time for another DANCE IN THE ROUND!
Saturday June 24 | 4:00-6:00pm
Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway | Studio 1
Dancer/choreographer Parijat Desai leads DANCE IN THE ROUND, a fun, inclusive workshop in Garba and Raas, circle dances from Gujarat, Indiaand a rare experience of collective movement and rhythm.
All levels and genders welcome, ages 8 to 88. If you're already got the moves, come them show off!
After an invigorating warm-up, Parijat will offer instruction in basic steps, and a brief sequence that takes you around the circle. She'll guide you slowly, and before you know it, you'll be dancing away. . .
Between each learning segment, there'll be time for all to dance in a large circle. At the end, we'll learn Raas, played with dandiya or wooden sticks.
Garba and Raas are typically played during the autumn Navratri Festival, nine nights of dance and community. DANCE IN THE ROUND is about offering inclusive spaces for dance, and opportunities to play Garba/Raas outside the Navratri season.
DANCE IN THE ROUND will be held at Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway (between 19th and 20th Streets), 5th Floor, Studio 1.
KID POLICY: This June workshop is oriented to adults, but children are welcome. There's no special instruction for kids this time around, so PLEASE NOTE: Kids 8 and up must be accompanied by an adult and require a ticket. Request a donation of $5$8 for children 7 and under, and they must have at least one adult each with them throughout. We love them, but please keep track of your children!
NOTES FOR ALL:
